Download FlickOS 2.2

Hybrid live ISO for amd64 — boots on BIOS and UEFI. About 1.4 GB.

Debian 13 with a graphical login, the start menu, and a welcome window. New in 2.2: restore points that can undo a software change that broke the system, even from the boot menu, and a Software app for apps from Debian, Flathub and FlickOS’s new community repository. FlickOS also has its own amber halo logo, boot menus and wallpapers.

What it needs

  • Computer: 64-bit PC (amd64), BIOS or UEFI.
  • Memory: 1 GB minimum, 2 GB or more for web browsing. After login, FlickOS itself uses about 500 MB.
  • Disk: 10 GB minimum. 20 GB or more is recommended, so restore points have room.
  • Tested on: FlickOS is developed and tested on a 2014 ASUS R556L laptop.

Verify the download

After downloading FlickOS-64bit-v2.2.iso, check the SHA-256:

13d5e1dff3f3834422b7a1cfa5a4fd24c0549c5238d4d029769d52d15dc9f1af
echo "13d5e1dff3f3834422b7a1cfa5a4fd24c0549c5238d4d029769d52d15dc9f1af FlickOS-64bit-v2.2.iso" | sha256sum -c

Or download SHA256SUMS from the same SourceForge folder and run sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.

Write a USB stick

  1. Use Balena Etcher, Rufus (DD mode), or another hybrid-ISO writer.
  2. Or with dd (replace the device path):
    sudo dd if=FlickOS-64bit-v2.2.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress oflag=sync
  3. Boot from the USB stick (disable Secure Boot if your machine requires it for unsigned media).

Live session

The live session logs in automatically as user with password live. Explore the desktop, then right-click the desktop and choose Install FlickOS when you are ready.

Install

  1. Start the Calamares installer from the desktop menu.
  2. Follow the steps: language, keyboard, partitioning, user account. The installer uses btrfs by default, so you get restore points; ext4 is still offered. You can also choose whether to have swap. A 10 GB disk is enough to install; with 20 GB or more, restore points have room.
  3. Reboot into the installed system when Calamares finishes.

Installed systems get a graphical login (greetd). FlickOS packages update from theapt repository. Notes, Write and Phone Screen are in that repository too, free for now, and an update does not install them. What they are.

Privacy and licensing

Once a week, an installed FlickOS sends one anonymous count: its version and roughly how long ago it was installed. Nothing else: no machine ID, and the server keeps no internet addresses. It is never sent from the live session, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings → Privacy. The counts are public.

FlickOS’s own work is free software under the GPL-3.0. Like Debian’s own install images, the ISO also includes some non-free parts from Debian, mainly firmware so Wi-Fi and graphics work on more computers. Notes, Write and Phone Screen are not free software: they are free of charge for now, are not on the ISO, and are installed only if you choose them.
